About This Section:
The introns that occur in 16S and 23S rRNAs are organized into four preconfigured tables that disseminate the intron information and emphasize the major dimensions inherent in this data:
- intron position in the rRNA,
- intron type,
- number of introns per exon gene, and
- phylogenetic distribution.
The information collected on this rRNA Introns page is the basis for two detailed analyses that have been published elsewhere:
- the spatial distribution of introns on the three-dimensional structure of the 16S and 23S rRNA (Jackson et al., 2002); and
- the statistical analysis of the distribution of spliceosomal introns on the rRNA (Bhattacharya et al., 2003).
